How to help with the Writing Curriculum at home

Good writers are good readers. We must nurture reading, at home and school, to ensure children make progress and become effective writers.

Our curriculum ensures that all children have opportunities to write for different purposes across all subjects through the three text types of fiction, non-fiction and poetry. The focus is placed on a love of story, enrichment and language in order to create ‘impact writers’.

How to help with Wider Curriculum at home

Our wider curriculum has a key focus on developing knowledge, with a focus through vocabulary and retention. We use knowledge organisers to support this in class, as well as share them on Google Classroom for reference when completing home learning. Knowledge organisers, including key vocabulary, can also be found in Google classrooms. This is the key knowledge and vocabulary your children need to learn to understand their subject areas and topic. It is very helpful if parents use these with children as a tool to quiz them and read together. There are ideas on how to use them in google classrooms and teachers will happily discuss how to use these.

Some ways you can support

  • Talking about maths during “everyday” routines e.g. shopping, cooking, daily routine, calendar.

  • Board games (especially with dice) and playing card games - any of these games support number sense and quicker and quicker calculations

  • Telling the time - referring to time consistently

How to help with Reading at home

Reading is at the heart of all learning. It is a skill that nurtures curiosity, broadens our knowledge, builds our imagination, enriches our love for books and ultimately increases our knowledge and understanding of the world. The more you read; the more you know. The more you know; the more you can know. Reading opens doors, provides opportunities, choices and is integral to the success and development of any individual. Reading daily creates a consistent routine, leading to the lifelong practice of independently exploring topics of interest and research.
